July 2011

  1. Calico Pennants, David A. Ross. interesting premise...shiprecked man ends up on a timeless paradisical island with Amelia Earhart. But I didn't like the writing style.
  2. Commencement, J. Courtney Sullivan. Smith grrls rule.
  3. Dragon's Time, Anne and Todd McCaffrey. I am still a sucker for those dragons.
  4. The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon. Resourceful Afghani sisters start dressmaking to support the family.
  5. Escape, Barbara Delinsky. Manhattan lawyer reconsiders her life.
  6. French Lessons, Ellen Sussman. 3 intertwined stories of Americans and their French tutors.
  7. In the Garden of Beasts, Erik Larson. The story of the American ambassador to Germany at the beginning of Hitler's regime.
  8. Maine, J. Courtney Sullivan again. I liked Commencement better.
  9. Robopocalypse, Daniel H. Wilson. Don't let those phones get too smart or we could end up like this.
  10. The Shadow of the Wind, Carlos Ruiz Zafon. The mystery behind a missing author and his all-but-lost book.
  11. Sisterhood Everlasting, Ann Brashares...a touching followup to the Traveling Pants series. It might make you cry.
  12. A Stolen Life, Jaycee Dugard. Buy this to support her, even if you can't bring yourself to read it. What a courageous young woman, to survive through this 18 year ordeal. This book did make me cry.
  13. True Grit, Charles Portis. A classic.
For summer beach (or porch) reads, I would recommend Commencement and Sisterhood Everlasting. And if you like sci-fi, Robopocalypse.

I tried reading A Discovery of Witches but just couldn't get into it, and then it was overdue.
